Tororii

My game jam entry for the Game-Wisdom August 2023 Game Jam. The theme was "Opposite Day"; you pick a mechanic of a game, and flip it on its head.

NOTE: Unfortunately, I'm having trouble reducing the number of files needed to make an HTML5 version using GDevelop 5. Until I can find a workaround to this, please make do with the downloadable Windows/Mac executables.

About Tororii

An inverted variant of Sokoban. You push the boxes into a single marked spot rather than different spots, and you can push them together.

The catch is you cannot push each box into the spot one at a time. Players must arrange the boxes in a straight line and push them all in one go. (Unfortunately, I didn't [know how to] code this constraint in. So you still technically can do that.)

Tororii is Japanese for 'trolley', inspired by the luggage trolley in airports.

Inspiration

I was inspired by a scene from The Terminal (2004); Navorski, an immigrant forced to reside within the international airport, gathers trolleys around and arranges them in a single spot to earn enough money to pay for food.

So I thought, "What if there was a game like this?" And I went ahead and played around with the idea.

At the same time, I was exploring puzzle games, including Sokoban, after I was binging on Jon Blow's content.

Then I had the epiphany: Sokoban, while having only a handful of simple mechanics, is one of the deepest puzzle games on the market. Yet most other puzzle games often lack that "complexity of depth" despite having many interesting mechanics in the works.

Making Tororii was, in itself, my (constrained) attempt to bring back that challenge of complexity without using additional mechanics.

Of course, I'm not that great with puzzle design, so what you play here is rather simple and could be finished within a couple of minutes, if you're quick.
